All in all, I found that working with Media Composer 6. It is somewhat like driving a finely engineered classic car that has a new engine and a rediscovered youth. Version 6. The color correction and audio mixing capability is unrivalled in the NLE landscape. In my opinion, with the demise of Final Cut Pro 7, this is the most mature, fully developed and sophisticated NLE software system on the market today.

Enterprise and institutions Choose which Media Composer licensing works best for your production and business needs. I'll start with the cons, I suppose, because there are many. CONS: --Unintuitive. Nothing is straightforward, and simple processes, like adding a basic title or checking audio in your Source monitor, take extra steps that feel overdone and extraneous.
Editing in the timeline is very cumbersome and the Sync lock feature has a mind of its own, frequently leading to out of sync audio if you're not careful. Avid seems to be an NLE all about having one Video track. This becomes apparent when you add a second video track and find you have to toggle this small box between V1 and V2. If this box isn't on V2, you will not see video from that track.
It's annoying. Quite simply, the Avid interface feels dated. It looks like it hasn't been refined in years. The icons are small and the layout even with the buttons under the Composer all turned off takes up a lot of space. Avid does an abysmal job of using screen real estate. Worse than any program, let alone NLE, I've seen. Trying to use Avid with just one monitor, especially on a laptop, is not practical.
Why not just integrate everything into one regular mode like every other modern NLE? It doesn't make sense, it adds to the clutter, and is just irritating.
Avid is full, FULL, of bugs. I can't tell you how many errors I've had with my Mac. The worst came when I tried to use Marquee, Avid's title software. Marquee froze, Avid froze and wouldn't open properly. It affected the rest of my computer--I went through 4 hard shutdowns.
A fun fact to know is that Avid makes the brunt of their money off of expensive customer service plans. The bugs, in a weird sense, benefit Avid as a company. Some of tbese errors--the segmentation thread one--have been around for years. If you have to use Avid, make sure you have the appropriate graphics card. My Mac is supposedly fully compatible with Avid but it seems as if Avid needs a very specific kind. Pros --File management.
Avid has rock solid file management--that is the number one reason Hollywood editors stand by it. The ability to create and open bins between editors is a great idea, one that I would love to see in Premiere.
There is no worry of media going offline--unless using AMA--because of how Avid ingests, transcodes and indexes files. With the right hardware and set-up, Avid MC is quite powerful. Media Composer, in it's standalone software form, is only part of what makes Avid Avid.
If you speak to a Hollywood editor they could probably tell you why-- I don't have that experiencen, unfortunately.
All-in-all: Avid MC is a niche software that shines at the high-end film editing. It is excessive, both in design and functionality, for everybody else.
